Farcycles Rider Agreement – Why It Matters.

Farcycles has always been built on our local community, mutual respect and a shared love of cycling. Our rides are friendly, inclusive and welcoming, and we are proud of the culture that has grown around them. As we continue to grow, and as more riders join us from beyond our immediate circle, we have a responsibility to make sure that everyone understands the spirit and expectations of riding with Farcycles.

To support this, we ask all riders, both existing ride members and guests, to read and agree to our Rider Agreement before joining a ride.

Why We’re Introducing This

This is not about adding red tape or enforcing rules for the sake of it. It’s about:

  • Protecting riders by clearly setting expectations around safety and awareness.

  • Respecting our volunteer ride hosts, who give their time freely and deserve clarity around their role and responsibilities.

  • Demonstrating good governance to organisations we engage with — such as insurers, local authorities and community partners — showing that Farcycles operates with care and accountability.

  • Supporting inclusion, particularly for new riders who may come from clubs where agreements like this are standard and expected.

  • Preserving our culture, by making sure that as the group grows, the things that make Farcycles special — friendliness, care, mutual courtesy — remain at the heart of what we do.

A Shared Understanding, Not Bureaucracy

Cycling on public roads carries inherent risks. While we cannot eliminate them, we can acknowledge them together and agree to act responsibly. The Rider Agreement simply makes our shared understanding visible. It says:

  • We look after ourselves.

  • We look after each other.

  • We respect the roads, other road users and the spirit of Farcycles rides.

  • We understand that ride hosts are volunteers, not guides or instructors, and that every rider remains personally responsible for their own safety.

For Everyone’s Benefit

By agreeing, you help ensure that:

  • Farcycles can confidently continue offering free, inclusive rides to the community.

  • Volunteer organisers and hosts feel supported rather than exposed to personal liability.

  • Our rides remain enjoyable, safe and sustainable for years to come.

This is a positive step towards securing the future of Farcycles as a community cycling organisation run by riders, for riders.
